Why you are going on the Oregon Trail:

Here is my form:

Name: Marie Howards
Age: 11
Who you are traveling with: Mom, Dad, Twin sister Mary
Why you are going on the Oregon Trail: We love adventure! My Cousins live in Oregon and we also want to be near them.

Some facts about the Oregon Trail:

Between 1841 and 1869 settlers made the five to six month Journey to what are now Oregon, California, and New Mexico. A Wagon Train is a group of settlers traveling together. (There's safety in numbers!) In some cases people were forced to abandon all their belongings and continue te journey on foot. People had to brave River Crossings and Snowy Mountains. At night people danced around the campfire located at the center of their circle of wagons. Travelers were rewarded with sites such as Chimney Rock, Scotts Bluff, and Ayres National Bridge. It was surely a true adventure.

Clothing:
Clothing was usually a simple Calico dress for girls. For boys it was shirts and Pants or Overalls. If you were rich though that was a different story.

Elizabeth's flickered as she woke up from a good night's sleep. She looked around the wagon to see if her father was awake, but there he saw him, sleep gracefully with a smile on his face.

Marie looked over at Mary. She was sleeping. They always got up at night and talked. She heard a wolf howling in the distance and Papa snoring. Everything seemed perfect except for lay ahead tomorrow: A river crossing.

The River

Post  mbg9 on Sat Jun 14, 2008 9:10 pm

The river rushed in front of Marie's wide eyes. She stared at it, transfixed as she clutched Mary's sweaty hand. She didn't even bother to wipe it on her dress. "Marie its our turn to cross." Said Papa stepping into the water to guide the Oxen. The girls clutching hands stepped into the wagon to join her Mother. Their servant, Nellie was in the wagon containing the supplies to help them open a General Store when they got to Oregon. They owned one back east. At first, everything was going as planned, then, when they were in the middle of the river one of the Oxen became frightened." We're all going to die!" Thought Marie, a worrier. Water started to seep into the wagon. Mary screamed. Then as soon as the water came it went. Mother heaved a sigh of relief. When Marie felt the wagons wheels roll onto the river banks she knew everything was going to be ok.
